Grilling Gone Wild

grilled_avocados.jpgTreat Dad, Grandpa or Great Grandpa to a great grilled meal (or designate one of them as grillmaster) with these spiced up creations for a fiery Father’s Day.

The Joy of Soy: Rub corn on the cob with soy sauce before or while it’s on the grill. The soy provides a salty bite to complement the sweet corn. Try this kicked up creation.

Fired-Up Fruit: Throw some fruit on the grill for a side dish or dessert; the natural sugars will emerge for a super sweet treat. Pears and pineapples maintain their shape on the grill, but reduce the grilling time for softer fruits like peaches, plums, mangoes and honeydew melon. After cutting the fruit, soak it in cold water with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice per cup for half an hour before grilling to keep it colorful and juicy. A light spray of cooking oil on the grill should do the trick. Try this tasty twist.

Book Review: "Pie: A Global History" by Janet Clarkson
pie.jpgPie: A Global History” is one of the better installments of Reaktion Book’s Edible Series collection (see here, here and here for others).  Janet Clarkson writes well within the Series’ format; and she supports her definition “pie” with refreshing historical and literary allusion and without redundancy. Those with a sweet tooth may be left disappointed, as the crux of Clarkson’s research lies within the meat-filled varieties of ancient Europe. Wherever your allegiances lie when it comes to pie, Clarkson gives interesting food for thought on a subject that is inherently more complex than Reaktion's past subjects.
Book Review: "What We Eat When We Eat Alone" by Deborah Madison and Patrick McFarlin
eatalone.jpgWhat We Eat When We Eat Alone” by Deborah Madison and Patrick McFarlin is the perfect book for the voyeur cum social anthropologist, though it is debatable whether or not these two terms are fundamentally different. Ever the supermarket voyeur, I relish the surreptitious glance into the contents of another’s cart. What are they eating? What exactly are they going to make with that? When we do find ourselves alone, however, it is our solitary search for sustenance that is one of our character-defining moments.
Have No Fear: Summer Beer is Here!

If you’re Sandra Dee and Danny Zucco, summer nights mean strolling and drinking lemonade. But for the more adventurous summer lovers, these brisk beers balance out flame-grilled foods and offer an invigorating zing to cool off a summer night.

Sam Adams Summer Ale, Boston Beer Company: bottled, on-tap, summer

This wsummershandy-bottle-pour.jpgheat beer has a hint of lemon zest for a summery splash and is made with grains of paradise, a rare African pepper that adds a speck of spice.

Leinenkugel SummerShandy, Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company: bottled, on-tap, summer

Though you probably won’t find it at your local lemonade stand, check your local pub for this pale ale; it combines classic lemonade flavor and beer with wheat, barley and a hint of honey.
