As alldedicated foodies are probably aware, Vietnamese cuisine is the nextbig thing on the restaurant scene. True Vietnamese cuisine varies byregion. Northern Vietnam is the birthplace of Vietnamese civilizationand has strict traditions regarding spices and other ingredients. Manyof today's most popular dishes in Vietnamese restaurants originate fromthe North. Southern Vietnamese cuisine is more influenced by that ofChina, and so includes sweeter ingredients and exotic herbs. In centralVietnam, small plates similar to dim sum are popular, and the spicesused are distinctive from any other part of Vietnam. In the UnitedStates, Vietnamese cuisine has become popular for its simple, fresh andhealthy offerings. Detox Diary: Day 3
(3 votes)
I have NEVER had to go to the bathroom so badly in my life! I was stuck on the subway and I thought that I was going to pass out or, worst-case scenario; my bladder may have exploded right there on the spot.  The pain that I felt on that subway did not even compare to those nights back in college waiting to use a scummy bathroom in some fraternity house basement while waiting in a line with about 37 other girls.  This was a million times worse.  I finally bolted out of the subway and to the closest toilet I could find.  Relief! (Just on a side note, the bathroom I so conveniently found was at the newly renovated Plaza Hotel.  There is nothing like a 5 Star toilet!)

Detox Diary: Day 2

There is nothing like starting your day with instructions that say, “Today you may experience some physical sensations, headache, flu like symptoms, feeling of coldness, stomach cramps.” Sheesh!! Well the GREAT news is everything is working like normal, except my bladder of course…  I changed my mind; the green morning drink is bad. I don’t know why I thought otherwise.  However, I manage to get it down like a pro.  Only took about five minutes!

Today progressed fairly quickly and anytime I had the sensation of hunger, there was another drink ready for me to consume.  One juice for example was called, “Very Berry Ade.” Now one might assume that this drink would be fruity, sweet and probably delicious.  Well, that assumption would be wrong, very wrong.

Cinco de Mayo: America's favorite non-American holiday

Celebrate the battle of Puebla* by getting in touch with that little bit of Mexican within (even if that little bit of Mexican comes from having a burrito at lunch paired with a slew of tequila-infused margaritas). Put on your sombreros, shake some maracas and get ready for one cerveza-filled fiesta. Make this day mexellent with this list of New York area fiestas. Ready on tres.  Uno, dos…

Detox Diary Day 1

I enjoy eating fruits, vegetables, grains, and yogurt, and I do my best to get my weekly dose of Omega 3’s. I try to stay away from anything fried (except the occasional basket of fries) and only buy whole wheat bread.  I do admit to having a sweet tooth and enjoy ending most meals with something sweet and chocolaty, but then again, who doesn’t?

I recently had the opportunity to sign up for one of Jill Pettijohn’s (of Jill’s Café in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn) nutritional cleansing programs.  That’s five days of nothing but natural, organic and freshly made juice to detox your body. It consists of six beverages a day, including a daily green juice, three lemonades, two soups, and one nut milk (non-dairy).

Jill has been guiding people through these programs for five years.  As her website states,

"This cleanse is designed for people on the go, to be able to continue to work while clearing the body of toxic residue, rest the digestive tract and boost the immune system…Juices and soups make it a very simple way to take in nutrition in a very concentrated form and allow the body to benefit from the healing forces of nature.  Taking into the body whole and living foods untreated with herbicides and pesticides, uncooked and untreated gives us the full benefit of what Mother Nature has provided, it is an energetic whole, an original creation.”

With nothing to lose, except a few needed pounds, my liquid diet adventure is about to begin…
