Detox Diary: Final Day

Day Five

I think all of you have heard enough about my trips to the bathroom, so I will spare you the details of this last and final day of my detox.  All in all this was a pretty fun experience.  I am so proud of myself for completing this challenge.  On day one I really didn’t think that I would be able to do it.  I can’t believe that I am going to say this, but it was not that hard! Honestly, if I can do it, anyone can!  Not only do I feel lighter and healthier, but my clothes are fitting so much better and for the first time in a LONG time, I am motivated to stay healthy, exercise and control my food portions.

Although it felt a tad extreme at points, I highly recommend Jill’s juice program to anyone who is looking for that extra push.  For anyone out there who has had one too many cookies, French fries, pizza, beer and/or vodka tonics and it ready for a fresh start.

What's In Season: May

It's official: the winter coat now needs to be buried in the far reaches of your closet, next to the stuffed animal you just can't bear to throw away and that Christmas sweater you try to forget exists.  So grab the frisbee, find the picnic basket and attempt to score a table at a restaurant outside. Just don't forget those allergy meds...

Look for the following popping up more frequently on menus or at your local farmers’ markets or supermarket:

  • Apricots
  • Asparagus
  • Berries: blackberries, raspberries, strawberries
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Corn
  • Green beans
  • Melons: cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon
  • Peaches
  • Spinach
  • Sweet onions
  • Zucchini

Brooklyn's Finest Fare

sushi.jpgDear Manhattan,

Okay, yes, fine, you still have many more culinaryofferings than your borough buddy Brooklyn, but seriously, you got somecompetition.  Last night’s Brooklyn Eatsevent took place at the gorgeous Stage 6 at Steiner Studios and featured someof the best food the borough had to offer. Some thoughts on the Team Eats’favorites (yeah…we had a lot):

Pack Your Knives: Episode 8

Guest Judge:  James Beard award winner and Oprah’s personalchef Art Smith.

Quick Fire: Createan entrée in 15 minutes using one of Uncle Ben’s rice mixes.  Antonia won immunity with her rice salad withsteak.

EliminationChallenge:  The contestants had tomake a delicious and nutritious meal for a family of four with a $10budget.  The added twist: the chefs werepaired with a child from the Common Threads program, which aims to teach kidsabout the importance of nutrition and physical well-being. Antonia swept theday with whole wheat noodles, after a teary start (she missed her own child) tothe elimination challenge. Nikki, for once, was in the top 3 with her one-potchicken and vegetable dish.

Mark, Lisa and Stephanie all were bottom finishers. My personalfavorite and funny guy Mark ( a sous chef at Public restaurant ) will no longerbe living the American dream of becoming Top Chef.
