Written by Kristina Chiappetta
Tuesday, 20 July 2010

1burgerguy.jpgThis Saturday, we braved scorching temperatures and took the long F-train ride out to Stillwell Avenue.  With the 10th Annual Village Voice Siren Fest to fill our ears with sweet tunes, it was the perfect time to feast on Coney Island's legendary grub (and ride the Cyclone, of course).  Plus, the music festival brought with it some visiting vendors - serving up everything from fancy crepes at La Belle Crepe to Frank's Red Hot wings.  Read on for our breakdown of the Coney Island culinary scene, including a slightly modified food pyramid to help guide you through pigging out in this summer hotspot.

  • Today is National Daiquiri Day! Make sure to celebrate this great day in cocktail history at Happy Hour.

  • Tomorrow from 11 am until 3 pm, the founder of the Red Mango will be selling smoothies for just $1 at their Union Square location! There will also be a DJ on site and free gifts up for grabs while supplies last!

  • Shmaltz Brewing Co., the maker of He'brew, now operates the world's smallest brewery on Coney Island. The many beer flavors are all inspired by the legendary carnival!

A delicious dose of what's going on in the weird and wonderful world of food.

  • Turns out cupcakes aren't just the trendiest treat in NYC--they're also becoming a big factor in driving the city's economy.
  • Midtown Lunch releases a helpful graphic so you can determine your Six Flags roller coaster-worthy Shake Shack wait time.
  • Virgin Airlines have long been at the forefront of awesome air travel, and now they're getting even better: their new seasonal on-flight menu, which includes desserts courtesy of Chef David Lebovitz, is now debuting.
  • Fork in the Road announces its picks for the top 10 bars in Manhattan based on the vibes, booze, and locals within.
  • Unsurprisingly, Cinnabon is reinventing itself as a "bakery-cafe" that will offer food beyond sticky, sweet buns, like full breakfast and lunch options.
