Food Network fans looking to get a little quality time with their favorite TV chef know that, when it comes to the NYC Food & Wine Festival, the cooking demonstrations - not the big parties - are where to go. Saturday was the day for cooking demos this year and Alton Brown kicked it all with the first show of the day. Fans of Good Eats, who lined the street and packed the New School auditorium, were not disappointed.

Alton hosted his hour-long cooking demo with the same ease, knowledge and humor that he brings to Good Eats and Iron Chef. He picked Bourbon as his ingredient of choice and made two dishes - Bourbon Ice Cream with Pecans and Bacon, and Bananas Flambe - all the while focusing on his Southern roots. Here are a few of our favorite moments from his demonstration.

  • On growing up: Alton admits to coming from "Appalachian trailer trash" and said his dad told him Deliverance was a documentary.
  • On Southerners keeping chickens: "We keep chickens. We'll be ready when the apocalypse comes."
  • On why he turned to science in the kitchen: "I'm not a good cook by nature. When I wanted to find out how to make good eggs, or why my pot roast stinks, the answer was always science."
  • On Martha: "If Martha had done time in a Southern prison, I think her show would be better."
  • On kids: "They're fun to make and hard to live with, so you should have as much fun as you can at their expense as they grow up."
  • On eating in NYC: Alton says his one must-go-to restaurant for all of his trips to NYC is Popburger.
