AmericanAsk anyone in Louis' Lunch, this is the place where the Hamburger was born (well at least according to Louis' lore). Their historical burgers stay true to the old fashioned ones, a patty between two slices of toast, some cheese, tomato, and onion for garnish, and not a bottle of mustard or ketchup in sight! (Don't even try to assail their ears with a ketchup request because, according to Louis', condiments corrupt!)

Culinary History, Hold the Ketchup
Reviewed on Friday, 27 June 2008
Louis Lunch invented the hamburger, and with that comes the right to refuse serving ketchup. (Don't ask, or you will be banned in Soup Nazi fashion.) The burgers are grilled in tall cast-iron columns to cook them just right, and the toasted sandwich bread, cheese, and onions add flavor to the meat that would ordinary be crowded out by a loud condiment like ketchup.
If you're visiting Yale you have to try a burger from the place that invented it, but if you're looking for gourmet keep on walking up the street to Gastronomique.

If you live in the Yale/New Haven area, you must visit Louis' at least once. Burgers aren't the best I've ever had, but it's one of those places that you have to eat at, if only just to say you did.

The Burgers are great, but the service is surly to say the least. Be prepared to be insulted
