Could've been better

It seems like almost everyone who goes to this cute little place is a couple, and they have the tables set up accordingly. Since I went with two other friends, we had to wait a while to be seated (on a Monday night) and ended up being seated at a table for two with an extra chair. It was pretty busy and so the service was super slow! (I usually don't mind slow service, because I would rather be able to sit back and relax rather than be rushed, but our waitress was almost unnervingly slow.)
The food was tasty, but nothing unreal. We ordered the hummus platter to start and it was great! They didn't give us enough pita, though, so we ended up having a ton of hummus left over. When we asked them to bring us more pita they only brought out one. I ordered the vegetable cous cous and have definitely had better. The vegetables were a bit mushy and overcooked, and were not seasoned very well, making the entire dish very bland. One of my friends ordered the steak, and I would definitely order that the next time I'm there! It was cooked perfectly medium rare and had a great flavor! I also tried some of the vegetable risotto, which was mediocre (it had a very sweet sauce, which was different).
A lot of the other dishes on the menu sounded really good, so I will probably go back and not order the same thing again.

lovely restaurant, lively food

Cafe Mogador is a quaint East Village staple with good Moroccan food. The falafel is perfectly crispy and the hummus is nice and creamy. I ate the bastilla, which is layers of phyllo dough with chicken, egg, and several (some slightly sweet) spices. It was heavy without being too heavy and came with a nice beet salad. All of my friends were pleased with their meals--ranging from chicken tagine to mussels to gazpacho. The restaurant itself is small, cozy and dimly lit but feels very comforting and welcoming. It's a nice place for a small gathering of friends or a casual date--especially because the prices are so reasonable. Mostly everything is $15 or or under. Awesome blueberry mojito as well.

wonderful moroccan cuisine

I came to Cafe Mogador for a party but the setting would be ideal for a date or casual meal. It had a nice, romantic, candlelit atmosphere. There was at least an hour wait but it was absolutely worth it for the quality Moroccan food. As a hummus connoisseur of sorts, I would have to say that this is the best hummus I have ever had. It was so creamy and flavorful, it simply melted in your mouth. I ordered the bastilla, which was a filo pastry stuffed with chicken, almonds, and a spicy yet sweet combination of spices. I have had Greek dishes similar to this one but the bastilla had a more unique a flavor and the difference in textures between the almonds, the filo, and the chicken was very nice as well. Most of my friends ordered the cous-cous with different types of meat and it received stellar reviews from all of them.
