Repeatedly bad

I eat at steakhouses frequently and have covered all of the names in Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as in other parts of the country. I decided to give the Striphouse a third try after very mixed previous experiences. I should not have bothered.
The place was half empty, not surprising for a summer Sunday night, so we were seated immediately. The waiters were quick in taking water orders and generally did a good job with the drinks. Our starters were good, original and tasty. The bacon is especially good. The problem lay in the steaks. We had ordered them medium rare and they were mixed at best. Parts of mine were clearly well done, and the meat had gristle in it, as well as fat around the edges. It was also dry. Even smothering it in their steak sauce could't help the texture. Also for a 40 OZ. piece of meat it did not come to the table so big. My son, an avowed carnivore, didn't even bother to finish his. The dessert was a slice of cheese cake big enough to feed an army, something that may be their signature but seems like an awful waste. The sorbets are good but mundane
Overall the experience was bad and was the final nail in the coffin. It confirmed my prior experiences there, which had shown the restaurant to have no right to claim itself as a superior steakhouse.

Best Steak in NY
Reviewed on Tuesday, 12 February 2008
You name it and I have been there for steakhouses in NY. Peter Luger's, Mark Josephs, Dylan Prime, STK, Delmonicos, etc. I went here for a dinner with colleagues and couldn't be more impressed. From the greeting, to walking out the door, everything is taken care of. The ambiance is not like most steakhouses in NY. Luger's and Josephs are very 'boys club' type old school spots. STK is your newer chic and stylish type Meatpacking District hotspot. While I like all, and continue to be a patron for all of the above, something at Strip House just stands out. It's not too chic with fake people, but there is a vibe. Service here is great, as it should be.
The steak is one of the best I have ever had. We split a long bone rib-eye (med-rare) and a NY Strip (med-rare). Both were amazing, yet very different. The long bone looks like something from the Flintstones TV show and the NY Strip reminds you of Kobe Beef. The Strip is perfectly marbled giving you a 'buttery' type consistency much like Kobe. The long bone is just amazing. They have a very good wine selection, and I would recommend the Ridge Three Valleys. I can hardly comment on the desert, since we didn't have any room, yet the chocolate cake might have been stacked higher then the long bone rib-eye. Do yourself a favor and stop by this great place, you won't regret it. One great thing, it's not over-priced. Great value for what your getting. Cheers!
