I came here for: Casual meal
It seems that the servers at this East Village spot are more interested in looking good than knowing how to serve food. The menu is fairly simple, and they do not allow substitutions for many of their dishes (even for a simple omelet, they would not use a different cheese). I understand that some dishes are carefully prepared, and ingredients are carefully chosen to create a specific taste and dish, but with a regular ol' omelet, I was pretty surprised. I also ordered a side of bacon with my breakfast, and it was not until the food came to the table that I realized the dish already came with bacon. It would seem only logical that a good server would bring this to my attention upon ordering, rather than making me pay additional money for something that was included. Still, hoards of people wait outside for their brunch on weekends, and the burgers are pretty decent. Not necessarily worth a wait.

My girlfriend and I had always wanted to try this place, having walked past it several times. We finally went last night and quickly discovered that our anticipation was largely in vain. The Smith's food isn't bad, but it certainly isn't very good. My braised short rib was a little bit tough and cooked in a very simple sauce over simple potatoes, giving it a bland flavor and an unimpressive presentation. The wine was also a disappointment and was served in the wrong type of glass. The server was largely apathetic and seemed like he did not care to be there, and the place was noisy and a bit dirty. Considering there are so many great places in the same price range within a two block radius, I would not waste my time here again.

It was nice for a casual get together. The pizza on the appetizer menu was very good.

Fashioned perfectly after a Parisian Brasserie, you will immediately feel worlds away from the noisy, commercial-centric avenue on which this newest venture stands. The brunch-centric Jane owners, Jeff Lefcourt and Glenn Harris remodeled the old Pizzeria Uno joint with subway tile floors, reclaimed barn wood, and vintage wall coverings to position this as the perfect neighborhood haunt. The menu complements the cozy yet eclectic vibe with such favorite offerings as almost burnt mac\' and cheese, burgers, fried calamari, lamb schnitzel, and roasted cod all at low prices. Pair your meal with the their big carafe- you will surely be woozy by the end of your meal and the wine is first class. You must not leave without dessert- this is the first upscale American Brasserie that offers a full list of ice-cream sundaes (your childhood favorites always hold a special place in your heart). Try to Black Pussycat- it was absolutely unreal. The most entertaining moment you will have is when you head downstairs to the bathroom. The owners spice up your night with a peephole showing all your old burlesque movie favorites, accompanied by an old barber chair and an old photo booth. This is the type of place where the cozy vibe, friendly service, and top-notch comfort food will keep you chilling drinking liters of carafe at your table with old friends after hours. If you close up the restaurant at 1:30am, as I did, you know you found your new neighborhood spot.
