My book club chose Veselka, one of the many Eastern European haunts down in East Village, for one of our monthly meetings. The place was cute and well-lighted - very loud (for discussions), but full of weekend brunch excitement. I didn't really know what qualified as Ukranian food, so I decided to get a meat combo platter with a good sampling of dishes to educate myself. The platter was HUGE - by the end, I had a stack of little plates from the various little side dishes it came with (soup, salad, challah). Ukranian dumplings, pierogis, were pretty tasty, though you'll feel a little suffocated if you don't down them with plenty of water. My lettuce-wrapped meat thing was also decently stuffing. Overall, a good introduction to Ukranian food.

I've only been here once but I am dying to go back! My roommate has been a bunch of times it is one of her absolute favorites. The place has a very East Village feel, busy, but very chill with a mixed crowd. I was told my friend that I HAD to get the kielbasa platter which was an awesome rec.- the portion size was huge, the sausage was savory and delicious, and it came w. two sides. Plus it was totally affordable. Also, I'd never had pierogis before (which is a crime I realize now because they are amazing) so I knew that I had to order them. They had a special version with goat cheese (I'm a goat cheese fanatic) and they were soooooo tasty! My friends and i split this chocolate custard thing for dessert that was equally good, I hear all there desserts are yummy, I think they have a lot of good pies. If you haven't tried it, then definitely go!
