ItalianThe tastes of Italy both new and old are very much alive at this lovely trattoria located in the heart of Little Italy. Chef Frank Lania prepares plate after plate of heartwarming cuisine, and manager Nicholas Ligotino makes every diner feel at home, whether seated in front of Focolare's glowing fireplace, or admiring the view of Mulberry Street out the front window. The food, however, is the true star of this show. If hazelnut chickpea soup is on the menu, do not hesitate. The delightful purée has the luxurious mouth-feel of a clam chowder, but lighter, more earthy, and a dollop of fresh tangy pesto atop adds the perfect foil. Ricotta Gnocchi, a house specialty, melt on the tongue–a divine new means to enjoy the cheese in a subtle and more sophisticated manner. The filet mignon is perfectly cooked, with a rich smoothness reminiscent of foie gras; and the house-marinated rack of lamb is tantalizing–complemented by a bittersweet package of prosciutto-wrapped endive. All desserts are worthy of consideration, but Focolare's basil ice cream is a revelation, startlingly refreshing with a pungency far more complex and unexpected than that of mint; the perfect palate pleasing note at the end of a truly delectable meal.

Nouveau Italian in the heart of little Italy
Reviewed on Friday, 18 July 2008
I went to Focolare expecting lots of red-sauced pasta. i certainly was not expecting the incredible meal i received. From an amazing steak tenderloin, to a rabbit ravioli, Focolare never ceased to surprise. And the best delight of the evening? Basil ice cream, a punch of flavor akin to mint, but endlessly complex.

Little Italy's newest eatery has a delicious menu, reflective of this unique Little Italy hood's culture and ethnicity, courtesy of Executive Chef Frank Lania, who came from the famed Fiamma. The interior's fireplace and jazz make Lania's newest restaurant a warm and welcoming atmosphere, all attributes of the moniker's English translation to hearth. Home, after all, is where the heart(h) is. This is a great place for a family meal or a romantic dinner. The service and food is impressive in this modern looking bistro.
