MexicanFrom the outside, it might appear to be just your average taqueria, but La Esquina harbors a three-fold secret. You can order at the counter, wait a few minutes and take your food to go or sit on a barstool facing the window. You can also head around back and have the host seat you in either the indoor or outdoor dining area and have a sit-down meal. Or, for the truly intrepid, you can slip through a metal door marked "Employess Only" and down a narrow stair to the very hidden gem that is the brasserie. Wherever you end up, the extensive taco menu is the highlight, featuring a range of meats (chicken, pork, chorizo, steak) and fresh vegetables, beans, salsa and queso fresco on hearty corn tortillas.

Taco pick-me-up
Reviewed on Sunday, 02 November 2008
Ever get randomly hungry walking around Manhattan? I did this weekend as I trekked through SoHo, and lo and behold, La Esquina was conveniently there. For $3.25, I got a stewed pulled chicken taco with shredded cabbage and a fresh slice of avocado that helped off-set its spiciness (though it was never unbearably hot). Washed everything down with a mandarin Jarrito (Mexican soda) that was thankfully un-Fanta-like. My only beef with the taco was its tortilla shells - mine was no match for the chitpole sauce and broke apart fairly easily when I tried to pick them up. Seems like these tacos are best eaten with a fork.

Yo tambien!

This is an awesome lunch spot for lovers of Mexican food for whom a massive burrito is too heavy in the middle of the day. My aguacate con queso had a nice thick slice of avocado, which I appreciated, and both tacos that I tried came with a healthy dose of salsa verde, always a good thing. All in all, they were fresh, quick, and tasted relatively healthy. I'll definitely be back again!

me encanta el taco!

Definitely a top choice for tacos. The upstairs taqueria churns 'em out real fast and for $3-$4 a pop. They give you 2 tortillas per taco that are decently thick, ensuring that there is no breakage. Not too spicy either but definitely don't lack on the flavor.

Delicious on all levels

I have been at all the venues of La Esquina, in its takeout capacity as well as the two (or are there even more?) restaurants that lie within its depths. The most hidden is, obviously, the best, with an antique decor, a relaxed crowd and food and drink to match. No matter the hype about La Esquina the food is nothing to scoff at. It is legitimate Mexican fare, a permanent taco truck for all those SoHo-ers without one.
The margaritas (how can I not mention drinks?) ain't too bad either

A watermelon and tabasco smile!

The plato julia fulfilled a recent craving. I had been craving some down home Spanish food like a pregnant women whose water just broke craves pain relievers. It had cheese, it had meat, it had avocado and it had my stomach hoping that somehow the plate was endless. To accompany the plato julia i also had a Watermelon water. It tasted like they dehydrated the watermelon. On a hot day like today it could not have been anymore refreshing.

3 Words! Cheesy Corn & Tequilla!
Reviewed on Friday, 18 January 2008
I've eaten a lot of things that La Esquina has to offer. The Cheesy corn is the only thing worth mentioning. The tequilla list is impressive. But people come to La Esquina for the scene not the eats.
