Lupa gets it right

Lupa-The She Wolf gets it right
We are just back from Rome and have essentially ate our way across the city, so going to an Italian restaurant in New York is definitely taking our chances. BTW, there is no bad pasta in Rome, but there is terrible Pizza.
Lupa, the she wolf, symbol of Rome, is wonderful bistro that gets it right. The waiters are extremely knowledgeable, (do you know the difference between Borsci and Lucano digestifs) and are actually helpful, rare in New York.
Appetizers are served in soup bowls and are tasty and distinctive. I liked the Winter Squash alla Romana. Pastas are bountiful and have interesting twists; the Bavette Cacio has a bread crumb topping. The major compliant is that the selection is small. The main courses fish or meat are seasoned just so. Sorry, Vegans need not apply. While the wine list is not cheap the variety is amazing and half carafes are available. Desserts are definitely Italian style and even the Tartufo, an ice cream bombe, has a certain savior faire.
Italians entertain at restaurants not usually at home and Lupa always has several large groups going at one time. Rather than assign a single waiter to a large table teams of waiters work together and that way everyone gets served together.
Warning the front room is noisy and reservations are not only a must, but weekend reservations are hard to get. Dinner for two with an inexpensive wine comes to about $140.

Excellent Italian Food, Experience
Reviewed on Thursday, 31 July 2008
Lupa is an amazing restaurant with true Italian authenticity. Props to Mario Batali on finding some excellent chefs to keep his restaurant at the top of its game. Many celebrity chefs these days just move on to opening another place as fast as possible, neglecting their older establishments. The atmosphere was warm and rustic, and the food was fresh and relatively simple, evoking a classic Italian villa ambiance. High end specialty ingredients, sure, but no unnecessarily ornate presentation. Lupa wants you to dig in and enjoy the taste of its food more than the appearance. The asparagus were crisp and tasty, though a touch on the cheesy side (pecorino). The sardines were wonderful, with the true focus of the dish the flavor of the fish itself. The gnocchi was incredible and is one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had (including in Venice, Florence, and Rome). The saltimbocca (veal wrapped in prosciutto) was delicious and enormous, and the chicken diavola was fresh and spicy but in no way overwhelming. The panna cotta dessert was interesting with the black pepper and served as a nice light finish to a huge meal. Finally, the waiter's cheerful assistance in taking time to help me choose a very appropriate and still reasonably priced wine (out of a 10 page wine menu) was very much appreciated. All in all, this is one of the more expensive dining experiences I've had but certainly a worthwhile one. My date and I left completely satisfied with everything.

So delicious! I smelled the fresh bread, rosemary, and olive oil scents as soon as I walked into the room. Lupa is just one of those places that you can tell at very first sight is going to be a favorite spot. The atmosphere is just perfect for a lunch out but I can also see it being a nice romantic spot for dinner.
I didn't have much $$ on me so I only really had a plate of pasta -- hat-shaped zucchini pasta (homemade, of course!) PERFECTLY cooked, seasoned, etc etc...I really appreciated the thought and attention to detail clearly demonstrated in the dish: from the delicacy of the pasta to the delicious sauce and filling. The portion is SOOO small, though.

the pasta here is superb...cooked perfectly al dente...the sauce is terrific as well, with fresh plum tomatoes and nicely spiced...the cured pork in this dish was also great. I can't wait to go back!

It was one of those share with the people your with lunch's. We tried a bunch of things pasta's and a salad and a chicken dish. But the highlight of my meal was the Panacotta and Biscotti we had for dessert. The panacotta especially was probably top 2 or 3 desserts i have ever had. Gonna be back there real soon. Plus the service was excellent.
