ItalianMichael Psilakis–yes the man who revolutionized Greek cuisine in our humble metropolis–is at it again. This time at Mia Dona, a hip, evocative Italian spot on East 58th Street, co-owned by Donatella Arpaia, the maven who brought us davidburke&donatella and the now-defunct though lovely Dona. This midtown enclave exudes Spartan chic, and the food is just as sophisticated. Better yet Mia Dona delivers, bringing take-in to an entirely new level.

Very pleasant

Inside seemed too stuffy, but we sat out front outside (thankfully in a recessed area as opposed to right on the street) so that worked out very well. The food is varied, inventive, and great value. I wouldnt bother with the mixed meats though (they all taste the same).

I really enjoyed Mia Dona. Somehow, we scored one of the four outside tables on a beautiful evening. Our waitress was super nice and helpful when we had trouble deciding what, and how much, to order. We decided to just get a bunch of appetizers since all of them looked amazing. The grilled octopus was probably my favorite dish--it was a really thick piece which I always like when it comes to octopus--and it had a great, succulent flavor. The baked artichoke was also excellent, anything that comes with breadcrumbs and cheese is certainly a plus in my book. The spiedini was nice as well, it had 5 skewers of different types of meat (quail, merguez, veal, sweetbreads, and pork), all of which were cooked well but not as inventive as the other dishes. The gnudi was enjoyable, but as I said earlier, I'm a bit of a sucker when it comes to cheese dishes (though, frankly, the broth seemed overly complicated. I like gnudi on its own). It was so soft. The ramps/pancetta/fingerling potatoes were very straightforward, but that's how ramps should be. For dessert, the panna cotta was perfectly executed and tasted great with the maple ice cream. I would return to Mia Dona, especially since I didn't actually try any of the entrees!

Utterly Delicious

I went to Mia Dona last night and it was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed every morsel I food I put into my mouth. The feel is sophisticated yet relaxed (emphasized by the few dishes you eat sans silverware), and due to this a professional review of 2 stars may be all it can aspire to. The crispy rabbit with potato chips was a deliciously unique game-y take on fish and chips. The octopus with a red pepper feta sauce had just the right amount of heat and spice, but was still mild enough for those with more sensitive palates. I heard read many a review mentioning chef Psilakis' ricotta gnudi, a dish originally from the now-closed Dona, and it was divine. The ricotta dumplings melt in the mouth, coated by a thick yet delicated cream sauce topped with slices of speck fried to an ethereal crunch. For dessert I had a chocolate affogato, and I thought it more than succeeded (I had heard lukewarm things about Mia's desserts).
The one downfall: The locks on the "Water Closet" don't quite due the trick, so to the woman who walked in on me in a compromising position, I say, Don't fret, it was an honest mistake.

The food was so amazing. Everything we ordered was awesome. Definitely try the burrata if you like cheese, it was so creamy. When our waiter said the kitchen was out of it me and my friend were upset because that was why we went, so our waiter went back to the kitchen and was able to get one made for us! We split an app, a large pasta, and three sides and it was more than enough food. For New York standards, it wasn't that expensive either. Plus the drinks are really tasty too. I highly recommend Mia Dona for a casual night out.
