Wow, best Pastrami in the City
Reviewed on Wednesday, 30 April 2008
I have come here a few times only, as I live in the West Village. But everytime I am within 20 blocks of this place, I make sure I head on over. There are so many great things to order, but I always go with the Potato Pancakes and the Roumanian Pastrami.
The Potato Pancakes are great, but really can't compare to anything in the city. Come with some apple sauce which tops it off just right. Then the Roumanian Pastrami sandwich makes it out and it is amazing. I go Roumanian so you can taste every bit of the sweet Pastrami. Do yourself a favor and try it out. It's a NY hot spot.

So this place is on the level. Let me preface this review by stating that I LOVE Katz?s, and Katz?s corned beef is number one in my book hands down. That being said, this place knows their ***. I ordered a specialty sandwich with corned beef, pastrami, swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing (not a Rueben, because it wasn?t heated up). Actually...you know what, let?s back it up a bit.
They bring out a big bowl of pickles and a bowl of coleslaw...both amazing. I happen to be a connoisseur of coleslaw, and I can say that this was DEFINITELY fresh, and very tasty. So, the meal started out good (I was famished by the way and devoured the coleslaw and pickles). Then my sandwich came out. I was still very hungry and began attacking this ridiculous amount of meat stuck between two slices of rye. I started feeling very full about ? of the way through the sandwich, but it was so good that I just could not stop...so I didn?t. I finished the whole thing, and walked out of Artie?s like a zombie. Needless to say I was uncomfortably full for an hour or two after the meal.
The atmosphere in this place is a little cheesy, but worth it for the eats. At first it seemed as though our waitress was being very curt with us, taking our orders very quickly without really saying hello or greeting us at all. We didn?t really care though because we were so hungry, plus she warmed up as the meal progressed. By the end of the meal, she even sat at our table and talked to us about the history of the restaurant (she had been working there for a long time).
So overall, I would say that this place was a good choice. I won?t say it?s better than Katz?s (maybe the coleslaw was) but if you?re in the upper west side, and you want to hit a sick deli, check this place out for sure.
